I received a call from an advisor last Tuesday, who was concerned, his osj planned to visit him the coming Thursday. Not to give details, but the advisor had an hr issue earlier this year (not his doing or control). I knew from experience why the osj (and compliance officer) wanted a face-to-face mtg and not a phone call or zoom – no choice.We discussed why, what else they could be interested in and the possibility of separation.Not an easy discussion, but my role is to be candid and transparent. That day we connected with a securities-based attorney (one of six I use nationally as a resource for advisors) and 2 broker dealers/osj we have been engaged with. The advisor was comforted knowing he had several people and experts in his corner and that he has a plan “B” and “C”, regardless of the meeting outcome. Well…he was termed! BRUTAL…first time anything like this has happened to him and a spotless/clean background. So, we jumped into plan “B” and “C”.Guess the point I’m sharing: We never know what tomorrow will bring. My team and I are experienced and equipped to manage just about any situation an advisor/team will be confronted with. Red Flags When Hiring a Professional Trustee When you form a trust as part of your estate plan, one important decision you will make is who will oversee the trust’s management when you are no longer able to manage it (also known as your successor trustee). Because a trustee’s work may be time-consuming, complicated, and risk liability, many people consider naming a professional as trustee. When looking to hire a professional to serve as your trustee, the following are several red flags you should keep in mind.Do they have adequate resources? Is the trustee accessible? Lazard doesn't break out its headcount on a quarterly basis. Still, in line with chief executive Peter Orszag's intention of adding 10 newmanaging directors(MDs) a year (net), Lazard has been hiring. In the past few months, it's added Adam Cady from Bank of America for large-cap sponsor coverage, Charles Noel-Johnson, Jason New, and Kevin Glodowski for restructuring and Ali Syed from Citi to cover sovereign wealth funds.Given that Lazard MDs are on salaries of $400k+ and that even average individuals there have been known to earn $500k all-in, you might think Lazard's profits would be dented by this hiring. But the jaws are positive. In the first quarter, revenues at Lazard rose 40% year-on-year, operating expenses rose 23% and profits went from a $22m loss to a $36m profit.Suddenly, Orszag's growth strategy, previously dubbed"crazy,"seems entirely sane.Lazard is still hiring. Orszag wants to use all the new MDs to double revenues by 2030. If they continue to generate new business at the current rate, this target will be hit five years ahead of time.
