Day 3 draft tracker: College players remains emphasis for Padres (2024)

Following the third day of Major League Baseball’s draft (note: signing bonus for players drafted after the 10th round don’t count against teams’ pools unless they are more than $125,000):

20TH ROUND

RHP Chase Burns

  • School: Beech HS (Tenn.)
  • Overall: 610
  • Age: 18
  • College commitment: Tennessee
  • Bats / Throws: Right / Right
  • Height / Weight: 6-foot-4 / 215 pounds
  • Ranked No. 47 by MLB.com: “Burns pitches at 92-96 mph, regularly touches 98 and peaks in the triple digits with his fastball, which has outstanding induced vertical break and some natural cutting action. He uses both an upper-70s curveball and a mid-80s cutter/slider that both grade as solid offerings, with scouts split as to which is better. His upper-80s changeup lacks consistency.”
  • Ranked No. 50 Baseball America: “Burns has shown an ability to pitch with lower velocity and improve the quality of his control, but scouts think he still needs to learn how to control his body, figure out his wingspan and fine tune some of the details of his mechanics to get the most out of his top-end stuff (which is exceptional) with more consistency.”

  • School: St. Petersburg College (Fla.)
  • Overall: 580
  • Age: 20
  • College year: Second-year freshman (junior college)
  • Bats / Throws: Left / Right
  • Height / Weight: 6-foot-4 / 225 pounds
  • 2021 stats: .415 avg., .523 OBP, .636 SLG, 6 HRs, 43 RBIs, 4 steals, 41 walks, 27 strikeouts (47 games)
  • From the Padres war room: Power-hitting prospect.
  • Note: Not ranked by MLB.com or Baseball America.

18TH ROUND

LHP Gage Jump

  • School: JSerra Catholic HS (Calif.)
  • Overall: 550
  • Age: 18
  • College commitment: UCLA
  • Bats / Throws: Left / Left
  • Height / Weight: 5-foot-10 / 175 pounds
  • Ranked No. 43 by MLB.com: “He can throw four pitches for strikes, with a fastball that typically sits around 92 mph, but can touch 94-95, a heater described as “dark” by some scouts because hitters just don’t pick it up. Jump has a pair of distinct breaking pitches, with most preferring his curve to his slider, helped by his higher arm slot. He also displays good feel for his changeup.”
  • Ranked No. 58 Baseball America: “His fastball will occasionally sail on him, but he is an aggressive competitor who pounds the strike zone when he’s on. Jump’s size and delivery create questions about whether he can remain a starter. Most teams project him to relief, where his stuff and mentality invite comparisons to similar-sized lefties who became dominant closers.”

14TH ROUND

RHP Adam Smith

  • School: UNC Wilmington
  • Overall: 430
  • Age: 21
  • College year: Junior
  • Bats / Throws: Right / Right
  • Height / Weight: 6-foot-2 / 180 pounds
  • 2021 stats: 6-1, 2.49 ERA, 58 strikeouts, 26 walks, 1.35 WHIP, 61 1/3 IP.
  • Ranked No. 244 by Baseball America: “Smith sat in the 91-93 mph range this spring and touched 97 mph out of the bullpen. As a starter he didn’t quite get to that peak velocity, but generally sat in the lower 90s. He throws a slurvy breaking ball in the 78-82 mph range that has solid three-quarter break and depth and also mixes in a mid-80s changeup that shows impressive arm-side fading action at its best.”

  • Age: 22
  • College year: Senior

  • 2021 stats: .404 avg., .480 OBP, .716 SLG, 8 HRs, 40 RBIs, 3 steals (28 games).
  • Ranked No. 409 by Baseball America: “Hit .412/.508/.742 this spring through the Gauchos’ regional opener despite missing almost two months with a broken hand. Castanon is a strong 6-foot, 195-pound infielder who just plain hits. He has solid bat speed, controls the strike zone and has a natural feel for the barrel. He crushes fastballs, stays on breaking balls and drives the ball with authority from center to left field. He began tapping into power more this year and hit a career-high eight home runs.”
