Focus on Upliftment

As we move through this busy December, my goal is to uplift you. I want you to feel refueled and refreshed, ready to turn your heart and mind toward what God has in store for the New Year. Each episode this month will be a bit shorter, offering bite-sized encouragement that you can easily fit into your hectic schedule.

December is often the busiest time of the year for worship leaders. Between planning special services, coordinating with teams, and ensuring everything runs smoothly, it can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s so important to take moments to pause and reflect. I hope these shorter episodes provide just the right amount of inspiration and encouragement to help you navigate this season with grace and joy. Let’s make the most of this season by focusing on what truly matters – our connection with God and our service to His kingdom.

Celebrating Gains

When we look back and celebrate what God has done, it lifts our spirits and helps us focus on the positives. Instead of dwelling on where we are not yet, let’s celebrate the gains and how far we’ve come. This approach can uplift your spirits and foster a heart of gratitude.

Reflecting on our gains is a powerful practice. It’s easy to get caught up in what hasn’t been accomplished yet, but taking the time to acknowledge progress, no matter how small, shifts our perspective. It’s about recognizing the steps forward, the answered prayers, and the ways God has moved in our lives and ministries. This practice not only encourages us but also builds our faith for what lies ahead.

Episode Highlights:

  • Episode 94 with Yancy: Yancy shared about the power of small faithful yeses and how they lead us on God’s path. She emphasized the importance of cultivating worship for the next generation. Yancy’s insights remind us that every small step of obedience adds up to significant progress. Reflecting on these small victories helps us appreciate the journey God has taken us on. Yancy also spoke about how these small steps can have a ripple effect, impacting not just our immediate circle but potentially influencing many others in ways we might not even realize.
  • Episode 105 with Amber Peairs: Amber discussed the critical need for worship leaders to have a strong foundation in identity, spirituality, musicality, administration, and relationships. She highlighted the common struggles of jealousy, comparison, and insecurity among worship leaders. Amber’s wisdom is a powerful reminder that our identity in Christ is the foundation for everything we do in ministry. Her practical advice on maintaining balance and integrity in these areas is invaluable for anyone serving in a worship capacity. She also touched on the importance of continuous personal and spiritual development, reminding us that we are always growing and learning.
  • Episode 95 with Andrea Olson: In this episode, I emphasized the importance of building a legacy rather than a platform. Leading with the end in mind ensures that the ministry continues to thrive even after we’ve moved on. This mindset shift is crucial as we prepare for the New Year, focusing on long-term impact rather than short-term success. Building a legacy means investing in people, creating sustainable systems, and ensuring that our efforts today pave the way for future generations to continue the work God has started through us.

Key Insights from the Episode Clips

Yancy’s discussion on the power of small faithful yeses is a reminder of how God guides us step by step. Reflect on the growth you’ve seen in your ministry this year. Celebrate those small victories and let them fuel your journey forward. Remember, every small step of obedience leads to a greater purpose. Yancy’s testimony highlights how God’s guidance often comes through simple acts of faithfulness, leading to profound outcomes.

Amber’s emphasis on identity is a powerful reminder. Knowing our identity in Christ helps us navigate the challenges of ministry. Reflect on where your identity lies – is it in your gift or in the Lord? This reflection can help realign your focus and reduce feelings of overwhelm. It’s essential to keep our hearts grounded in God’s truth, especially when we face the inevitable ups and downs of ministry. Amber’s advice to consistently return to the Word of God and anchor our identity there is crucial for maintaining spiritual health and resilience.

In March, I talked about building a legacy, not just a platform. This mindset shift is crucial as we lead into the New Year. Think about how you can lead your ministry in a way that sets up future leaders for success. It’s about creating a sustainable, impactful ministry that continues to flourish long after we’ve moved on. Building a legacy involves mentorship, creating robust systems, and ensuring that the ministry’s vision is clearly communicated and carried forward by future leaders.

Practical Steps for Worship Leaders

As we prepare to step into 2024, here are three practical steps to help you finish the year strong and start the next with clarity and purpose:

  • Measure Backwards: Celebrate how far you’ve come. What has God done in your ministry this year? Reflect on the growth and victories, both big and small. This positive focus can uplift your spirits and motivate you for the future. Take a moment to jot down these victories and revisit them whenever you need a boost of encouragement. Make it a habit to regularly reflect on these gains, perhaps even setting aside time each month to do so. This practice will help keep your focus on God’s faithfulness and the progress you’ve made.
  • Reflect and Realign: Ensure your identity is rooted and grounded in the Lord. Spend daily time in the Word and in prayer. Use tools like the “Pause” app by John Eldredge for moments of mindfulness throughout your day. Regular reflection and realignment help maintain a healthy perspective and reduce stress. Make it a habit to check in with God regularly and realign your heart with His will. This regular practice of reflection and realignment helps you stay connected to God’s guidance and ensures that your actions are aligned with His purposes.
  • Lead with Legacy in Mind: Think about your ministry beyond your current role. How can you set up your team for success after you’re gone? Empower others, delegate responsibilities, and build systems that will endure. Leading with the end in mind ensures a lasting impact and honors the legacy you leave behind. Consider mentoring younger leaders and sharing your knowledge to ensure the ministry’s continued success. Think about creating resources, documentation, and training programs that can help future leaders step into their roles with confidence.

Leading with Gratitude and Purpose

As we wrap up this second-to-last podcast of 2023, I want to remind you to keep your focus on celebrating gains, reflecting on your journey, and leading with a legacy mindset. This season can be overwhelming, but by taking intentional steps to celebrate, reflect, and lead with purpose, you can end the year strong and start the New Year with a renewed sense of direction and gratitude.
